Single Equality Scheme

Our Single Equality Scheme encompasses the force's approach to the Equality Act 2010, the National Equality Diversity and Human Rights Strategy for the Police Service, and the National Policing Improvement Agency's Equality Standards.

Equality Duty Report and Employment Monitoring report

The Equality Act 2010 introduced the Single Equality Duty for public bodies and incorporated previous statutory duties including race, gender and disability which were introduced to improve equality outcomes for these particular groups.

The Equality Duty requires the force to show that in the decision-making processes, in service delivery and in our employment practices, we have had due regard to the need to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Act;
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it; and
  • foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

These are often referred to as the three aims or arms of the general equality duty.

As a public body, we are required to publish Equality Information which demonstrates our compliance with the General Equality Duty. These two reports contain information about:

  • The protected characteristics of our workforce
  • The protected characteristics of our communities
  • An overview of our equality-related activities

Information about how protected groups are affected by our policies and practices

Between now and the beginning of April 2012 we will be working with local communities, partners and other stakeholders to review our equality objectives which will be published within our ‘Single Equality Scheme'.
