Force Structure

West Mercia Police is organised into five territorial policing units which cover the counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Worcestershire.

Our territorial policing units are:

As of October 2011, the force employs 2,204 police officers, 282 community support officers, 1,761 police staff and 296 members of the Special Constabulary.

Details of the force's future funding following the Comprehensive Spending Review can be found here.

Chief Officers

In June 2011, Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police agreed to form an alliance between their two forces.  The alliance will enable both forces to meet the challenge of reducing policing budgets and provide greater operational and organisational resilience in the years ahead. (View the full announcement).

Force identities will be retained and both forces will continue to address local policing priorities agreed with local communities and partners.

Each force retains separate Chief Constables and Deputy Chief Constables who remain accountable to their Police Authorties for the delivery of policing.  Assistant Chief Constables have shared portfolios across both forces, as do the Director of Finance and Director of Enabling Services posts.

Chief Constable David Shaw

Deputy Chief Constable Simon Chesterman

The Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable are responsible for the overall control and direction of the force and liaison with the wider Alliance Chief Officer team.
