Chief Superintendent Nick Mason
Nick studied for an honours degree in Classics at the University of Birmingham and joined West Mercia in 1985. As a constable he worked in a variety of uniform roles in Worcester.
In both the sergeant and inspector ranks, he worked primarily within the CID. He was part of the first child protection team to be formed within West Mercia while a sergeant at Worcester and went on to spend four years as the detective inspector in Hereford. One of the highlights of Nick's career was to lead what was then the largest ever operation conducted by the force into local drug dealing on a subsequent posting to Telford.
On promotion to chief inspector he managed the force's response to the changes in policing styles which had emerged from the tragic murder of Stephen Lawrence in London and went on to represent the force on sensitive investigations within other police forces during his time in Professional Standards. Nick then returned to Worcester for 18 months as the local superintendent.
As a chief superintendent he has led the force's initial response to the changing financial climate for policing, identifying £9.8M in savings and efficiencies. In 2011, he was appointed as head of the Human Resources Command with responsibility for Personnel, Learning & Development and Professional Standards.
In May 2012, Nick took up his current position as Head of Territorial Policing.
