Deputy Chief Constable Simon Chesterman

Simon’s career began in 1984 when he joined Thames Valley Police and worked as a constable in Oxford. He went on to specialise in areas including CID, intelligence and the drug squad. He was promoted through the ranks and pioneered covert evidence gathering techniques which led to a number of convictions.

In 2001, he led an enquiry into the theft from Bletchley Park Museum of the famous Enigma machine and the subsequent blackmail case. The investigation attracted worldwide media attention, and resulted in the recovery of the machine and a Crown Court judge’s commendation.

As a Detective Superintendent, Simon worked in Professional Standards and gained experience of responding to critical incidents. On promotion to the rank of Chief Superintendent, he became Area Commander for Buckinghamshire Basic Command Unit.

He has a degree in Policing and Police Studies, and he successfully completed the Strategic Command Course in 2006.

Simon took-up his appointment as Assistant Chief Constable with West Mercia Police in June 2007 and was appointed as Temporary Deputy Chief Constable in August 2011, being confirmed permanently in the role in December 2011.

He has a number of national responsibilities, on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) which involve armed policing, Taser and prison intelligence.
