Diversity

The Police Authority has a Combined Equality Scheme and West Mercia Police has three Equality Schemes covering issues of Race, Disability and Gender. In addition we have three Independent Advisory Groups: ‘Black & Minority Ethnic', ‘Disability' and ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered'. These groups provide support and advice on many areas of business from serious and organised crime investigations to policy and procedure.

On 1 October 2009 the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), the Association of Police Authorities (APA) and the Home Office published its Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Strategy for the police service. The new strategy sets out its vision for the police service which is ‘a police service that has the trust and confidence of all communities and reflects the communities it serves'.   One of our key priorities for 2010/11 is to integrate this strategy into our service delivery.

The force will use the new NPIA (National Policing Improvement Agency) Equality Standard as a tool to benchmark progress and to drive improvements in service delivery and in building public confidence in policing.
