How We Monitor Performance
We use a wide range of performance indicators to measure how well we are performing. These indicators are assessed on an ongoing basis and are reviewed formally at a monthly meeting of Chief Officers and Senior Managers. The Police Authority is regularly informed of performance across a range of matters with Members receiving monthly monitoring reports and reviews of performance in detail at scheduled Panel meetings. In addition to the key indicators listed below, we will assess performance in relation to:
- harm caused by drugs
- satisfaction with the justice system
- protection of vulnerable people, including domestic violence
- levels of serious organised crime
- achievement of partnership commitments
- achievement of efficiency targets and best value for money
We have identified the 12 indicators below as the key measures we will use to track progress in delivering our outcomes of:
- The public have confidence in us and express satisfaction with our policing service
- Levels of crime and anti-social behaviour remain low
- Our communities feel safe

* In June 2010 the Government removed the measure and national target set for police forces around confidence which asked whether residents agreed that the police and local council were dealing with crime and anti-social behaviour that mattered in their area. This has given West Mercia the opportunity to revisit the measure and target in the current policing plan for 2010/11. West Mercia believes that the confidence of our residents remains important but felt that a more appropriate, simpler, police focused measure should be used asking residents how good a job the police do in their area. The target will be removed and the new measure monitored for the rest of year.
In addition to the indicators above our performance is also reported by APACS (Analysis of Policing and Community Safety), an annual assessment conducted by the Home Office which compares our performance with that of similar police forces (North Yorkshire, Wiltshire, Suffolk, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Cambridgeshire and Devon & Cornwall).
