Protective Services
The police service must be able to deal effectively with terrorism, serious crime and other major challenges to public safety. The term "Protective Services" is used to describe the police response to these most serious crimes and the potential threats from which the public must be protected. They are a key priority for the force and an integral part of our mission to protect the public and to ensure that the public have confidence in us and feel safe.
Protective services include
- counter-terrorism and domestic extremism,
- serious organised and cross-border crime,
- civil contingencies and emergency planning,
- critical incident management,
- major crime,
- public order,
- strategic roads policing,
- protecting vulnerable people.
West Mercia has developed its capacity and capability in all areas and continues to work in regional and national collaboration to enhance its ability to respond and in order to deliver effective protective services across the region. We have a detailed three-year plan for further developing protective services, some examples include:
- Continue to invest capacity and capability and monitor our progress against delivering the ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Standards for Protective Services by 2011
- Lead and support the national and regional Counter Terrorism (Contest) strategy - with each of the 4 strands being actively managed (Prevent; Pursue; Protect; Prepare)
- Implement the new Force Operations Support Team (FOST) structure. This Unit will further enhance our capability to respond to incidents requiring firearms and deal with fatal and serious road traffic collisions in addition to supporting local response policing.
- Enhancing Firearms Training
- Work with the Safer Roads Partnership on roads policing
- Work collaboratively with other forces in the West Midlands region and national agencies to tackle serious and organised criminals affecting communities within the region.
Work in this area is overseen by the Protective Services Strategic Group.
The Regional Protective Services Group's objectives are to provide strategic direction for protective services collaboration across the region and to identify further collaborative opportunities where these will reduce risk and add value. Various formal and informal networks exist across the region to enhance protective services collaboration.
