Students - Stay Safe!

Okay, we know crime prevention isn't the most exciting topic when you're a student... You're busy studying new courses, meeting new friends and going out, right?

That's great! Student life is one of the best experiences you will have and West Mercia is one of the safest places to live and study.

We want you to have a great time at college, but remember to stay safe. Students can put themselves at unnecessary risk and can be vulnerable to crime. West Mercia Police's Stay Safe campaign aims to provide simple steps you and your mates can take to ensure crime doesn't cramp your style!

Look out for our Stay Safe posters and leaflets reminding you to ‘stop showing off' by keeping your valuables out of sight and to ‘just shut up' by securing windows and doors at your pad.

Keep yourself safe - and your valuables secure - by following these simple steps:

Will you just shut up!

Did you know that up to 50 per cent of all burglaries are committed by thieves who enter a house through an unlocked window or door? Outsmart thieves by keeping windows and doors shut and locked.

Just stop showing off!

If your valuables are on display, thieves can see them too.

Keep items such as mobile phones, iPods and digital cameras secure and out of sight - and if you don't need them, don't carry them round with you!

Have a great night out...

..but stay safe at the same time. Don't drink too much, be aware of drink spiking and always walk away from any trouble.

Get by with a little help from your friends

Look after your mates and always stay together when out and about at night or stopping to get money from a cash machine.

Get home safely

Always plan how you're going to get home after a night out. Don't walk home alone - always walk in groups. Stick to the main roads and try to avoid shortcuts and unlit areas.

Take a taxi you can trust

When using a cab, remember that you are only insured if you phone and book a taxi (i.e. a private hire vehicle) or if the taxi is a licensed hackney carriage.

You can only flag down licensed hackney carriages.

Don't let thieves steal your work

If your laptop's nicked, that's how many weeks of hard work gone? Save yourself the grief (and cost) by keeping it hidden and secure both in the house and when carrying it around. And don't forget to property mark your valuables with your postcode and house number.

Got an issue at your college?

Tell us about it! We can't promise to help with your coursework, but we do want to hear your concerns and improve student life in the area!
