Prevent - Play Your Part
Prevent is one of the most challenging parts of the counter terrorism strategy, because it operates in a "pre-criminal space", before any criminal activity has taken place.
It is about supporting and protecting those people who might be susceptible to radicalisation, and ensuring that individuals and communities have the resilience to resist violent extremism.
What could I watch out for?
There is no single profile of a violent extremist or a single pathway to radicalisation. A wide number of factors exist that can lead someone to becoming more susceptible to exploitation by violent extremists. These can include:
- Personal crisis - for example divorce or estrangement from the family, social exclusion, the search for identity, knowledge or "truth"
- Change in circumstances - for example migration or asylum and the impact of other cultures, laws or values on one's way of life
- Links to crime - for example some may use religion as justification for past or ongoing criminal activity.
- Under-employment - for example where the job does not reflect an individual's skills or experience which can lead to frustration.
The most important thing to remember is that if you are unsure about what is happening to someone you know, please get in touch.
