Dealing With Litter
Litter comes in all shapes and sizes, from small sweet wrappers and cigarette butts to large bags of rubbish. As well as breaking the law, it can be:
- Off-putting to visitors
- Demoralising for residents
- Dangerous, e.g broken glass on a playing field
- Expensive - it costs council tax payers £500 million a year to clean the streets of England (source Keep Britain Tidy)
Litter And The Law
Anyone caught dropping litter could face an on-the-spot fine of up to £75, which could rise to £2,500 if dealt with by a court.
We know that dealing with litter is an important issue to communities, so we work hard to not only tackle offenders, but find ways to help keep areas tidy.
Across West Mercia, we have been:
- Working with local councils and housing associations to help ensure litter bins are places where people need them.
- Through schools and youth groups reminding young people not to litter.
- Organising litter picks to help tidy up areas, often involving young people who volunteer their time freely
