Emergency Text
West Mercia Police has introduced a text messaging system to allow people who find it impossible or very difficult to dial 999 to still contact the police, fire or ambulance service in an emergency. This could be because they are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired. This service can be used anywhere within Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Worcestershire.
When Should I Use This Service?
The text messaging service should only be used to report an emergency and when dialling 999 is not possible.
For all other circumstances, you can find other ways to contact us here.
In An Emergency What Information Do I Send?
- Text police, fire or ambulance
- Give your name
- Give your location. Street name and town. Motorway name and any junction number. Any landmark nearby.
- Give details of what is happening.
- Give details of your disability, e.g. deaf, speech impaired. This information will help the crew that responds.
- Send to 80992.
What If I Need More Than One Emergency Service?
Text us the details and we'll ensure that other services are told.
What Do I Do After I Have Sent the Message?
- Check it has been sent successfully
- Stay at the location you gave us, if safe to do so
- Help any injured person, without putting yourself at risk
- Continue to seek help until we reply to your text
- Keep your phone switched on
Is This Service As Good As 999?
The service is an important additional way for deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired people to contact us. However, a text message is not free - you must have credit on your phone for this to work.
While most text messages are received soon after being sent, there can be a delay.
