Why Has the Non-Emergency Number Changed?
In November 2008 West Mercia Police launched a new telephone number for non-emergency police calls: 0300 333 3000. The new number replaces our old 08457 number.
The number has been introduced in response to concerns raised by local people about the cost of calling us.
The move to a 03 prefixed number is in line with recommendations from the Office of Communications (Ofcom) which established 03 numbers to help eliminate public confusion over call costs.
For more information regarding the introduction of 03 prefixed numbers visit the Office of Communications website at www.ofcom.org.uk
How much does the new number cost?
Calls to 03 numbers will cost the same or less than calls to 01 and 02 prefixed numbers and will be included as part of any inclusive minutes or discount packages, in the same way as geographic calls. These rules will apply to calls from any type of line including mobile, BT, other fixed line or payphone. However, the ultimate cost of the call will depend on the telephone contract you are on as these vary from supplier to supplier.
Why has 0300 333 3000 been chosen?
This number has been chosen because it is easy to remember and dial. It will also reduce the cost of a call to the police in a non-emergency situation.
What happens if someone calls the old number?
People calling the 08457 number will from 12 January 2010 hear a recorded message asking them to re-dial:
"To call West Mercia Police, please dial 0300 333 3000, that is 0300 333 3000. Remember, in an emergency always dial 999. Thank you'"
This message will be heard by callers to the 08457 number for a period of 12 months.
