Bogus Caller Targets Elderly Woman At Dorrington

Police are hunting a bogus caller who stole cash and jewellery from a 90-year-old woman at Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, after saying he needed to check her water boiler.

He called at the home in Church Road shortly after 5pm last night and talked his way in, claiming he had to check the boiler and pipes in case they were frozen.

After switching the kitchen tap on and asking the occupier to keep an eye on the water flow, he said he would do the same in the bathroom.

Soon after, he left the premises.  On checking her bedroom, the pensioner discovered her purse had been emptied and two rings stolen.  A total of around £140 was missing.

Detective Inspector Sarah Wagstaff said: "The offender was clearly targeting an elderly person.  He conned in his way inside and then distracted the lady to enable him to carryout a search.  It's highly likely he had an accomplice who may also have gained access.

"As soon as the man found her money, he made his excuses and left.  We are appealing for any information which might help us trace those responsible.

"In particular, we want to hear from anyone who spotted a stranger - possibly two people - acting suspiciously in the Church Road area of Dorrington from around 4.30pm to 6pm last night.  A vehicle may also have been parked up nearby.  Contact Shrewsbury police station on the 101 non-emergency number. "

The man who spoke to the victim was described as white, in his late thirties or early forties, of large build and with a round face.  He was wearing a navy blue hat and dark jacket.

DI Wagstaff added: "We remind people, especially the elderly, never to let strangers knocking on the door inside their home, whatever reason they give.  Tell them to go away and if you are suspicious, call the police immediately."
