Bridgnorth's Pubwatch Scheme To Be Revitalised

A new campaign is being launched to revitalise Bridgnorth's Pubwatch scheme to ensure the town remains a safe and friendly haven for people visiting licensed premises.

Bridgnorth Pubwatch was set up by the local police in June 2003 and although it has 17 members, the scheme has lost impetus in recent months with only a handful attending meetings.

But current chairperson Tracey Dobell, of The Harp, working with Shropshire's new Best Bar None and Pubwatch Co-ordinator Kelly Harris, is determined to develop the scheme and recruit new members.

Kelly said: "Over the last year or so, the scheme has become fragmented with only a few members coming to meetings. One of my main aims after being appointed was to help Pubwatch be as effective as it was in the past.

"Our main aim is to curb alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the town, essentially making Bridgnorth a safer and more enjoyable place for residents and visitors."

She said Tracey Dobell and several other licensees, together with the local policing teams, had done an excellent job keeping Pubwatch running. "I can now assist them in the more time-consuming duties, such as administration of banning letters and banning galleries."

At the last meeting, two more individuals were banned from licensed premises within the Bridgnorth Pubwatch scheme, bringing the total serving bans to 10. Some of the more serious cases, are indefinite bans imposed in 2004.

Kelly said: "For the future, it is our aim to see all members meeting monthly. We would also like to see new members join, such as licensees who have recently come to the town, and also representatives from off licenses and the major supermarkets.

"All licensees, whether in the on or off trade, have a duty to uphold their licensing objectives. This includes curbing alcohol-related anti-social behaviour, preventing underage sales and banning those involved in proxy purchasing.

"An example of good practice to emulate, is the newly established Ludlow Pubwatch which has 25 members, including supermarkets and convenience stores".

She added: "Tracey and her members are positive in their work and feel the scheme is an asset to the town and its community."
