Car Driver Killed In North Shropshire Road Collision

A car driver died today in a collision with a lorry on the A49 in north Shropshire.

The man, believed to be in his fifties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision happened shortly after 1am about half a mile north of the village of Preston Brockhurst.

There were no other casualties.

The A49 was closed and diversions set up while the emergency services worked at the scene.  It's thought the road will remain closed for repairs until about 6pm.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances and have issued an appeal for witnesses.

It's believed the black Peugeot 307 being driven by the man was travelling south and the DAF lorry was heading north in the opposite direction.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "The collision happened at 1.09am and a full investigation is being carried out to establish the cause.

"We are appealing to anyone who saw the collision or the circumstances leading up to it to contact Shrewsbury police station by dialling 101.  We also want to hear from anyone with relevant information who spotted either vehicle immediately beforehand."

The coroner for Mid and North Shropshire Mr John Ellery has been informed.  A post mortem and inquest will be held in due course.
