Don’t Let Drink Spoil Olympic Opening Weekend
With the warm weather set to continue and the opening ceremony of the London Olympics taking place later today, West Mercia Police is urging people to steer clear of trouble by not drinking too much this weekend.
Tonight and tomorrow night, extra officers will again be on the streets of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Worcestershire as part of the force's ‘Summer Presence' campaign.
The campaign aims to tackle alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour and violent crime over the summer months, by having a visibly higher police presence in town and city centres in order to deter troublemakers.
Chief Inspector Jerry Reakes-Williams is the force lead for the campaign. He said: "This weekend is certainly one for national celebration and there is likely to be much excitement in the build up to the opening ceremony for London 2012.
"While we want people to have a great time, we also want them to take responsibility for their actions and be aware of the effect they may have on other people and the wider community.
"West Mercia is a safe place to enjoy a night out and your chances of becoming a victim of crime are low, but there is a small minority who spoil it for everyone else by engaging in alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour.
"I would urge people not to drink too much and to know your limit. Look after your friends, stay together when on a night out and walk away from trouble.
"Finally, don't drink and drive. The only safe amount of alcohol to drink when driving is none at all, so arrange for a designated driver or organise your transport home in advance."
