Hereford v Shrewsbury Game Passes Off Peacefully

West Mercia Police would like to thank supporters of both Hereford United and Shrewsbury Town football clubs for their good behaviour at the local derby match on Saturday (28 January).

At least 40 police officers were on duty in Hereford as one of the biggest crowds of the season was seen at the Edgar Street stadium.

There were no significant offences or incidents of disorder reported and only one person was arrested; he has been given a Fixed Penalty Notice for using abusive words likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Speaking about the policing operation, Superintendent Charlie Hill, Territorial Policing Unit Commander in Herefordshire, said:

"There was one arrest related to the match and that was for an offence under Section 5 of the Public Order Act. As a result of this a 30-year-old man received a Fixed Penalty Notice.

"There were a significant number of officers working on the day and our operation went well. However, the fans themselves behaved extremely sensibly and were a credit to both clubs.

"We had assistance from British Transport Police on the day and that proved very helpful in terms of policing the rail network and helping to ensure the entire day passed off peacefully."
