Lime Danger Alert In Moreton-on-Lugg

Police in Herefordshire and Welsh Water staff have expressed concern following a break-in at a sewage treatment plant which may have put youngsters in danger.

The incident happened between 11am on Saturday 20 and 1pm on Sunday 21 February 2010 at Welsh Water's sewage treatment plant compound in Moreton-on-Lugg, near Hereford. The location is a secure compound in a field half a mile from the nearest property.

Persons unknown have forced open the chain link gates and driven a quad bike into and around the compound. A JCB on site has also been started up. Lime that was in the JCB bucket has also been deposited at various locations around the compound by the offenders, who have then left the site with their quad bike. Police believe local youths may be responsible.

Concern has been aired that those involved may have come into contact with the lime which is an irritant and may burn or permanently mark the skin. If the lime comes into contact with wet skin, it will leave a third-degree burn. Anyone affected by the lime should seek medical help immediately. Police also advise everyone to stay away from such places if it not their business to be there because of the dangers on site.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact PC Neil James, the local policing officer for the area based at Hereford Police Station on 0300 333 3000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
