Man Charged With Racial Abuse Offence At Shrewsbury Town Football Match

A 29-year-old man has been charged with a racial abuse offence following an incident during a Shrewsbury Town soccer match.

He was arrested on suspicion of carrying out a racially aggravated public order offence after making an abusive comment allegedly directed towards a Shrewsbury player during the League Two match with Northampton Town at the Greenhouse Meadow on January 2.

The man, from Northamptonshire, had been bailed while police made further inquiries.

He returned to Shrewsbury police station last night and was charged with a racially aggravated offence.  He was bailed to appear at Shrewsbury and North Shropshire Magistrates Court in Shrewsbury on February 16.

The full charge is that on January 2, at Shrewsbury, he used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress, thereby, and the offence was racially aggravated within the terms of section 28 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.
