New Project A 'Reel' Catch for St Martins Youngsters

Police in St Martins are hoping to reel in local youngsters with a brand new summer fishing project for the village.

Starting on Saturday 7 August and running for three sessions, Get Hooked on Fishing will give teenagers in the village a productive outlet for their energy during the holidays.

PC Bev Smith, Local Policing Officer for the area, has organised the project and said the first session on 7 August and last session on 31 August would be competitions against the established fishing group from Meole Brace in Shrewsbury.

The middle session on 11 August will take place for up to 10 young people from the area in St Martin's itself, whereas the other two will involve up to six children and take place in Ellesmere.

The project has been made possible with funding from and the assistance of The Environment Agency's national Get Hooked on Fishing scheme.

"This is a fantastic chance for young people in St Martins to have a go at doing something a little bit different this summer, while also engaging with their local police and community support officers," said PC Smith.

"Two of the three sessions will be fishing competitions between St Martins and Meole Brace in Shrewsbury, with prizes for the winners."

The project is being highlighted as part of West Mercia's ‘Respect Week' and aims to promote the range of measures that the force and our partners have in place to address and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Our aim is to raise awareness of the impact anti-social behaviour can have on others and encourage communities to respect and tolerate each other.

Communities can play an active role in identifying and reducing ASB by providing us with valuable information about what is happening in their area.

If you have any information or concerns, you can raise them by:

  • Attending your local PACT meeting, surgery or event.
  • Calling 0300 333 3000 to speak to your local policing team.
  • Emailing your local policing team via the force website www.westmercia.police.uk
  • Calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to report information anonymously.
