Police Authority Funds Bush Experience For Much Wenlock Youngsters

A taste of life in the "outback" of Wenlock Edge is being lined up for a group of youngsters embarking on a "bush skills" experience.

The unusual activity has been organised by Much Wenlock's Local Policing Officer, PC Stuart Lippitt.

He applied to West Mercia Police Authority for a £320 grant to take 40 young people on an outdoors adventure on Wenlock Edge in conjunction with the National Trust.

The grant, from the Authority's community initiatives fund together with a similar sum from Shropshire Council, will enable PC Lippitt to run eight bush skills experience days with 10 youngsters on each.

"They will have an opportunity to learn pioneering skills, such as preparing rabbits and chickens for cooking on their fires.  It will be both educational and exciting, promoting a positive interaction with the police and hopefully creating a better rapport with youths and parents in the area."

PC Lippitt and a qualified bush skills leader will supervise the sessions.  "The programme and dates are now being arranged and we will be canvassing for budding young Ray Mears to take part."

The scheme is being run under the police youth inclusion policy, aimed at engaging young people in constructive and enjoyable activities.  The policy has proved successful in reducing anti-social behaviour and promoting community harmony in many areas.

PC Lippitt added: "I'm grateful to the Police Authority and Council for funding this project and the National Trust has given excellent support.  As a result, the Local Policing Team will be able to continue working with young people in the Much Wenlock area to the benefit of all sections of the local community."
