Shropshire Residents Reminded To Check Door And Window Security

Police in Shropshire are reminding people to make sure their doors and windows are kept secure.

"Many burglaries can be prevented if people keep their back and front doors locked and also make sure all ground floor windows are secure," said a West Mercia Police spokesperson.

"People tend to lock their doors only when they go to bed but they should be kept locked at all times.  Opportunist thieves will be on the look out for insecure premises and it only takes a moment for them to sneak inside to grab any valuables they spot.

"All ground floor windows should be securely closed at night, no windows should be left open when the home is empty and we also advise window locks are fitted."

The spokesperson added that maintaining basic security could make all the difference in preventing a break-in.  Homes are particularly vulnerable at this time of the year when thieves know high value Christmas presents are likely to be inside.

West Mercia Police are currently running their Christmas Presence campaign, promoting crime prevention and personal safety during the festive season.

They have issued the household security reminder following a burglary at a home in Sydnal Lane, Woodseaves, near Market Drayton when entry was gained through an insecure patio door.

It happened between 5.40pm and 6.45pm yesterday and police have issued an appeal for witnesses or information which might help identify the offender.  The thief made off with £50 from the kitchen.

Contact Market Drayton police station on the non-emergency 101 number or the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111.
