Telford Student Celebrates His Wii Win!
A student from Telford College of Arts & Technology (TCAT) is celebrating after winning a Nintendo Wii in a ‘Stay Safe' competition that was run on the West Mercia Police website.
To win the competition 16-year-old Jonathan Shaw from Wellington successfully answered four simple, safety related questions and was then the lucky one of 138 entries who had his name pulled out of the hat to win the Wii.
Jonathan correctly stated that the student safety campaign was called 'Stay Safe', that you should keep your valuables secure and out of sight when out and about, that up to 50 percent of burglaries result from leaving a window or door open and that the only kind of taxi you can flag down in the street is a licensed hackney carriage.
Speaking about winning the competition, Jonathan - who was presented with his prize by Arleston & College's Local Police Officer PC Sam Anderson - said: "It was a real surprise to find out I'd won but I was absolutely delighted. You don't expect to win when you enter competitions like this so I'm really pleased to be the lucky one this time.
"I saw the ‘Stay Safe' posters around the college and have picked up some good tips from them that I'm still taking notice of now. It was because I'd seen the posters that I became aware of this competition and I'm really glad I took the time to enter by going to the West Mercia Police website."
The 'Stay Safe' competition was the first online quiz on the new force website, and supported the 'Stay Safe' student campaign which we ran in November. West Mercia's Stay Safe campaign aims to promote simple crime prevention steps that students can take to ensure they don't become a victim of crime.
The campaign promoted a number of ways that students can keep themselves safe and this advice included personal safety tips like:
- Have a great night out! However, stay safe at the same time and:
- Don't drink too much
- Look after your friends
- Walk away from any trouble
- Be aware of drink spiking
- Get home safely
- Don't drink and drive
- Just stop showing off! If your valuables - mobile, laptop, ipod, digital camera - are on display, thieves can see them too. Keep your valuables out of sight.
- Don't be flash with cash. Keep purses and wallets out of sight and well secured within coats, bags, etc.
