Last updated: December 2011

All information provided to West Mercia Police via our website will be treated in confidence and will not be disclosed to third parties without your prior permission, unless we are required by law to do so.

West Mercia Police reserves the right to gather information relating to site usage. Any information gathered is primarily for internal use to allow us to refine and improve the service we provide.

Certain sections of this site require personal information to be given, for example surveys and feedback forms. The provision of this information is entirely optional.

If you contact us by using email addresses provided on this website, you accept that you will automatically be providing your email address and possibly other personal information. We will only process any personal information you disclose to us via the website as necessary to facilitate the purpose for which it is provided. Information will only be held on file long enough to respond to your enquiry or comment.

As a word of caution, children under 16 years of age should not submit any information to any website without the consent of a parent or carer.

Security

We endeavour to take all reasonable steps to protect your personal information but cannot guarantee the security of any information you transmit to us online. You accept the inherent security risks of providing information and dealing online over the Internet and will not hold us responsible for any breach of security unless this is due to our negligence or wilful default.

Cookies

We use cookies on this website to store a user's preferences such as font size and background colour, and to help us see how people use the site via the Google Analytics tool.

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's computer tied to information about the user.  Your web browser can be set to not accept cookies or to ask you for permission each time a website wishes to place a cookie on your computer; please consult the help function for your particular browser.  For more detailed information about cookies please see the All About Cookies website.

Our first cookie records what visual settings you have chosen (i.e. text size or whether you have opted to use the high contrast version).  This is stored on your computer so that you don't have to change these settings each time you visit a new page or return to the site on another occasion.  It does not contain any personal data and is not transmitted to any third party.

This site also makes use of several cookies as part of the Google Analytics service (More details on what each Google Analytics cookie does can be found here).  The information generated by the cookie about your use of the website (including your IP address) is transmitted to Google. This information is then used to evaluate visitors' use of the website and to compile statistical reports on website activity for West Mercia Police. We use this information to help us improve the content of our website to meet our users' needs.

West Mercia Police will not (and will not allow any third party) to use the statistical analytics tool to track or to collect any personally identifiable information of visitors to our site. We will not associate any data gathered from this site with any personally identifying information from any source as part of our use of the Google statistical analytics tool. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. Neither West Mercia Police nor Google will link, or seek to link, an IP address with the identity of a computer user as a result of use of this site or the cookies it produces.

If, however, you would rather that the Google Analytics tool did not monitor your use of the website in this way (or any other sites that also use Google Analytics), you can add a plugin to your browser that will block this activity.  Please visit http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout for more information about the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Third Party Sites

The West Mercia Police website contains hyperlinks to websites owned and operated by third parties. These third party websites have their own privacy policies, including cookies, and we urge you to review them. They will govern the use of personal information you submit or are collected by cookies whilst visiting these websites. We do not accept any responsibility or liability for the privacy practices of such third party websites and your use of such websites is at your own risk.

Notification of Changes

If we decide to change our privacy policy, we will post these changes on this page so that you are always aware of what information will be collected and how we intend on using it.

Regardless of later updates, we will never use the information you submit under this current policy in a new way without first providing you with an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prevent that use.
