Community Volunteers

Volunteers at Shrewsbury Police StationOur community volunteer programme is currently a pilot project operating in Shropshire (but excluding the Borough of Telford & Wrekin). We hope to roll the programme out to other areas of West Mercia in the future.

West Mercia Police currently also has around 300 members of the public from all walks of life who volunteer some of their time to be a special constable in the force.

Building upon this success, we are now able to offer a wider range of volunteering opportunities to people who want to make their community a safer and better place.

If you have an interest in police work, this is your chance to find out more...

What does a community volunteer do?

Being a volunteer involves giving some of your time to help West Mercia Police improve the service it provides. Our volunteer roles have been created to assist or supplement normal day to day work undertaken by police officers and police staff.

Opportunities vary from one police station to another depending on the needs of the local community, however, typical roles include:

What can we offer you?

We understand your time is valuable and that there are many reasons why people may volunteer to work with us. In return for your help, we are committed to developing your skills as a volunteer and providing you with a friendly, interesting and safe working environment.

  • Support - If you are approved as a volunteer, you will be provided with help, guidance and support to carry out your role.
  • Training - You will not be expected to carry out tasks you are not qualified to do. Where necessary and appropriate, training will be given.
  • Expenses - Volunteers can claim certain travelling and other out of pocket expenses. This will be agreed with you when you are approved as a volunteer.

What can you offer us?

No formal qualifications are needed, but honesty, integrity, basic numeracy and literacy are essential. Volunteers should also show a positive and friendly attitude and a willingness to learn. We are looking for people from all different backgrounds who have these attributes and are aged between 16 and 80!

Volunteers must be of good character. The vetting procedure also includes close members of your family. While previous convictions will not automatically disqualify an application, they will be given careful consideration.

You must be a national of a country within the European Economic Area, or, if not, have leave to enter or remain in the UK free of restrictions. Due to vetting requirements it is difficult to conduct thorough checks on people who have not been resident in the UK for the previous three years. Therefore a three year residency is an essential requirement.

During the application process applicants will be invited to fill in a medical questionnaire.

If you fit these criteria and are willing to give around four hours a week of your time, please contact Roy Davies, Community Volunteers Co-ordinator, sending details of your name, address, telephone contact numbers (daytime and evening) and an email address if available to: Community Volunteers Co-ordinator, Shrewsbury Police Station, Monkmoor, Shrewsbury SY2 5RW.  Once we have received your details an application form will be sent to you. Alternatively, telephone us on 01743 264722.
