Nigel, a retired and former DSA Deputy Chief Driving Examiner, has celebrated Volunteer Week with us during the 1st - 7th June 2015.  Nigel has volunteered for West Mercia Police since September 2014, and was given the opportunity to experience a ride-along with PC Michael Haines.  Here's his story:

"Although I am now retired, volunteering with Warwickshire and West Mercia Police provides me with an opportunity to use part of my skill-set, work with a dedicated team of people, and put something back into the local community.

"On Monday 1st June as part of National Volunteering week, I had the privilege of accompanying PC Michael Haines on his early shift from Bromsgrove Police Station.  The day started with a general overview of the work carried out by the unit, after which I had the pleasure of being a 'fly on the wall' as Michael conducted his normal vehicle based duties. Where and when appropriate he provided me with background information to support his actions and decisions.

"The dedicated work ethic witnessed during the shift, coupled with the demands placed on a traffic officer in terms of constantly accessing visual and audible information whilst driving to a high standard, will be my lasting impression of the day.

"In addition to PC Haines my thanks go to the Volunteer Co-ordinator and to senior managers at Bromsgrove Police Station."

Nigel helps to deliver our Green Light Young Driver and Passenger Education Programme, which we deliver to 16-24 year olds across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
