Apprentice schemes

Apprenticeship Scheme banner - Holly West Mercia

The Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police apprentice project looks to provide a variety of people with experience in policing whilst studying for a professional qualification. It provides them with a wide range of workplace skills, and enables the staff members supporting them to build on their supervisory and mentoring experience.

The alliance has taken on several apprentices over the past two years. Four motor vehicle technicians (MVTs), including two female apprentice MVT's (a first for the alliance) and two apprentices in Human Resources.

Enabling Services Director, Richard Elkin, said: "The apprentice scheme for the alliance is a welcome addition to what we can offer the public in terms of opportunities in joining the police family.

"Supporting all in our communities, including our young people and giving them a step onto the employment ladder is hugely important to me so I am delighted that they have all settled in so well to their roles and enjoying their experiences. I wish them well for the rest of their placements with the alliance."

With the introduction of the new government apprenticeship levy we have recently taken on four further apprentices; two apprentices in HR, one apprentice in Finance and one apprentice in Business Support. The levy will also enable our existing workforce to have opportunities to further their own career development; Please speak to your line manager during your PDR and Talent Management meetings to discuss your aspirations.

Richard continues, "I look forward to welcoming more apprentices into the alliance later in the year. I am sure their enthusiasm and fresh ideas will make a very positive difference to us, so it's very much a win, win for all concerned."

"Over the next 12 months we will continue to work with the College of Policing and Education Authorities regarding apprenticeships for police officer, PCSO and a number of specialist policing roles too. An exciting time."
