Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 introduced the Single Equality Duty for public bodies and incorporated previous statutory duties including race, gender and disability which were introduced to improve equality outcomes for these particular groups.

The Equality Act 2010 refers to "protected characteristics" which are:

  • Age                   
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion and belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual Orientation

The Equality Duty requires the force to show that in the decision-making processes, in service delivery and in our employment practices, we have had due regard to the need to:

  • eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Act;
  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it; and
  • foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

These are often referred to as the three aims or arms of the general equality duty.

The aim of the Equality Duty is to embed equality considerations into the day to day work of public authorities, so that they tackle discrimination and inequality and contribute to making society fairer. As a public body, we are required to publish Equality Information which demonstrates our compliance with the General Public Sector Equality Duty. This report contains information about:

  • An overview of our equality and diversity priorities
  • Examples of good practice working with our diverse communities
  • Information and data on key equality and diversity areas of work

Below are our Equality Objectives for 2016-17 broken down into the 3 themes::

OPERATIONAL:

  • Increase in levels of trust, confidence & understanding within our diverse communities
  • Be great at supporting the most vulnerable and most likely to be at harm
  • Meaningful and targeted engagement, leading to positive outcomes

ORGANISATIONAL:

  • Demonstrate leadership and commitment and continuous improvement
  • A workforce that understand and responds to the different needs of society
  • Robust equality analysis to inform our decision making

PEOPLE & CULTURE:

  • Ensure Staff feel valued and respected
  • Organisation reflects the diverse communities we serve
  • Staff are informed and empowered to innovate
