UPDATED: Young girl dies following road traffic collision in Shrewsbury

UPDATED - 11.05am Friday June 16 *

West Mercia Police were called at 4.18pm yesterday (Thursday, June 15) to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Mytton Oak Road, Shrewsbury.

Emergency services attended and the pedestrian, an 11-year-old girl, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries, sadly she has since died.

A 77-year-old man from Shrewsbury was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He remains in police custody at this time.

*The 77-year-old man from Shrewsbury has been further arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Chief Inspector Alison Davies said "We are currently establishing the circumstances around this tragic incident. We are in the very early stages of the investigation and I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the vehicle beforehand, to contact us on 101 quoting reference 528s of 15 June as soon as possible."
