To become a police support volunteer you must be a national of a country within the European Economic Area, or, if not, have leave to enter or remain in the UK free of restrictions.

Due to vetting requirements, it is difficult to conduct thorough checks on people who have not been resident in the UK for the previous three years. Therefore, a three-year residency is an essential requirement.


You must be a British Citizen, European Economic Area (EEA) National, a Commonwealth Citizen or Foreign National with no restrictions on your stay in the UK.

Current members of the EEA are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.


The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) National Vetting Policy requires all applicants to have been resident in the UK for three years immediately prior to application.

Where applicants have been resident abroad due to serving in the British Armed Forces or on UK Government Service, they are considered to have been resident in the UK.

Employment history

As part of the application process, you will be asked about the nature of your employment history or other volunteer roles. You will not be approved as a volunteer where there is a significant possibility that this could lead to a conflict of interest in your professional life or other volunteering role. Minimum age of 17yrs, no upper age limit applies.


Volunteers must be of good character and be fully security vetted. The vetting procedure also includes close members of your family. While previous convictions will not automatically disqualify an application, they will be given careful consideration.


No formal qualifications are necessary, but reasonable numeracy, literacy and  IT skills are essential.
