Two West Mercia Police officers recognised at WMAS -'Excellence in the Community Awards' ceremony

On Thursday 28 March the West Midlands Ambulance Service 'Excellence in the Community Awards' ceremony took place at the Copthorne Hotel in Brierley Hill.

The awards were to honour people from across the region who have gone beyond the call of duty to help save lives and support the work of West Midlands Ambulance Service.

This year saw officers from West Mercia Police honored for acts that directly saved the lives of people while supporting the West Midlands Ambulance Service staff.

In May last year an elderly man was seriously injured and trapped in his car after a collision. It quickly became apparent to ambulance staff that the man's condition was critical and they were incredibly grateful for the assistance they received from officers PC Rebecca Edwards and PC Simeon Darrall-Jones; they set up the oxygen, helped with a rapid extrication and performed CPR as the man suffered a cardiac arrest during the process.

Their high quality CPR continued whilst ambulance crews administered advanced life support and they only took a step back when ample ambulance hands arrived at the scene. The efforts of everyone involved helped achieve a normal heart rhythm but, undoubtedly, without the support and heroic efforts of PC Edwards and PC Darrall-Jones, the outcome would have been very different.

ACC Martin Evans said: "It was an absolute honour to be able to attend this awards evening and to hear of the fantastic actions and heroic acts of emergency service staff, as well members of the public, a number of whom were from the West Mercia Force area. I was especially delighted and very proud to see Becky and Simeon receive their well-deserved award, for which they had been nominated by Ambulance staff colleagues who were in total admiration of their actions and professionalism at the scene of the incident. Very well done both."
