Working together in a strategic alliance

Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police have been working together in a strategic alliance since 2012.

The forces are now seeking to strengthen and deepen their work together to deliver the best possible protection from harm to our communities with the resources we have available.

The background to our strategic alliance

In June 2011, the Chief Constables of Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police and their respective Police Authorities at that time, committed the two forces to delivering all policing services in alliance.

One of the prime catalysts for the alliance was the necessity for the two forces to reduce their costs by over £30 million as part of the government's comprehensive spending review. However, it was also recognised that the benefits for both forces were far broader than financial, including delivery of greater operational and organisational resilience protecting frontline policing resources and ensuring our processes were lean and more effective to deliver the best possible services.

The alliance is not a merger. Each force retains its own identity, and since the inauguration of Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) in November 2012 the governance structure for both forces remains with individual PCCs, Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constables and separate financial accounts for each force.

During September 2013, the forces delivered its largest people movement plan as operational officers and staff took up roles under a new single operational policing model.

In 2015 we continue to put the needs of the communities first in everything we do and are working together in alliance to deliver the best possible protection from harm to our communities with the resources we have available.
Our Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police alliance provides us with a far greater opportunity to protect front line policing resources by doing things once; sharing assets and ensuring our processes are lean and effective across the whole geographical area.
