Direct Entry - Inspector

You've led in a team. Now lead in policing. With support from the College of Policing, we have opportunities to join West Mercia Police directly as an Inspector.

The West Mercia Police Direct Entry programme encourages people working at middle-management level across the private and public sectors to transfer those skills to a new career in policing.

The force is working in partnership with The College of Policing to deliver the Direct Entry Programme, which recruits people at the senior rank of Inspector. Applicants are recruited for their management skills in areas such as budgets, teams, resources, systems and cultural change, while also demonstrating their diversity of thought, life perspective and experience throughout the rigorous selection and assessment process.

These roles require dedicated, talented, flexible and proven leaders from outside policing, and do not require any previous policing experience.

The 24 month Inspector programme is fast paced, combining classroom-based and on-the-job training to equip recruits with the policing skills to complement their personal management experience and attributes. Rotational periods are spent in the roles of PC, Sergeant and Inspector during the training. In return, Inspectors receive a starting salary of £50,160 paid from day one of the training course.

Eligibility

We will consider applications from people who meet the Direct Entry eligibility criteria. In addition, you will need to meet our local force criteria:

  • You must not have a conviction as an adult or juvenile (although some minor offences and cautions may not exclude you)
  • You must not have tattoos on your face, neck, top of the hand, palms or fingers or any which could cause offence to members of the public or colleagues
  • You must be physically fit and not have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of under 18 or over 30. You will not be medically cleared for appointment while your BMI is outside this range
  • You must have been resident in the UK for the last three years
  • If not resident in the UK for the last three years, you must be able to supply an approved checkable history.

Direct Entry to Inspector Programme Meet and Engage Event

West Mercia Police is running two Meet and Engage Events to let interested people know more about the programme. At these events, you will:

  • Find out more about the fast paced 24 month Direct Entry Inspector programme, which combines classroom-based and on-the-job training to equip recruits with the policing skills to complement their personal management experience and attributes
  • See if you are eligible and have the right skills and qualities to make it as a successful Direct Entry Inspector
  • Have the opportunity to ask questions of senior officers to find out about what the job is really like
  • Get answers to process-related queries related to your application from the recruitment and other support teams.

Book your place for the event at 6.30 - 9pm on 23 January at the Ramada Hotel Telford Ironbridge or 29 January at West Mercia Police Headquarters, Worcester.
