West Mercia Police are hosting two free online webinars during June, aimed specifically at mature drivers and their families. Each webinar will cover different topics and aims to provide mature drivers with advice on how to keep driving safer for longer as well as guidance and support on making informed decisions about their driving.

Both webinars will be hosted by James Luckhurst, Founder of Project EDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death) and will feature a panel of expert speakers who will guide attendees through a range of subjects and issues that commonly affect drivers as we get older.

The webinars are aimed primarily at drivers aged 65+ and/or their family members. Attendees are welcome to book a place on one - or both - of the webinars, depending on the subject areas of interest to you. Please ensure you follow the link below to book your place on the relevant session/s as numbers are limited.

Even if you have already booked in to one of our upcoming Mature Driver Awareness Sessions across Herefordshire, Worcestershire or Shropshire over the summer months, you are very welcome to attend these webinars. They will provide a wealth of information in addition to the virtual reality experience you will take part in during your upcoming awareness session.

Webinar 1: Health, Mobility and Driving

Saturday 7th June 2025 (10:00am-11:00am)

This 60-minute webinar offers attendees the chance to find out more about some key health and mobility issues which have a direct impact on our fitness to drive. Topics covered will include:

  • Driver vision and the vital role of good eyesight in reducing risks on the roads.
  • How our mobility can change as we age and the impact on our driving ability.
  • Driver impairment and medication.
  • Diabetes and how it can affect driving.
  • Support for families, friends and carers who are concerned about an older driver and advice on how to start empathetic conversations with them about their driving.

Webinar 2: Your Vehicle and Your Independence

Thursday 12th June 2025 (2:00pm-3:00pm)

For many mature drivers, their driving ability reflects their freedom and independence. This 60-minute webinar focuses on the tools, technology and support services that are available to assist your driving, build your confidence and skills, or independently assess your driving ability. Topics covered will include:

  • Knowing your vehicle and its technology and how to use it to assist you.
  • Dash cams and Operation Snap.
  • Driving assessments or appraisals: The different types available, how they are conducted and where to find one close to you.
  • Mobility scooters.
  • Ways to maintain your independence when it’s time to think about retiring from driving.
  • YSS Charity and #MORSE (Making Our Roads Safer for Everyone).
