Operation Themis

The badger cull is a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) policy that is being implemented by private companies under licence by Natural England.

Operation Themis is the policing response to the badger cull and is a joint operation between Gloucestershire Constabulary and West Mercia Police.

The role of West Mercia Police during Operation Themis is to facilitate lawful activity and allow peaceful protest, whilst also investigating any crimes that are committed. Our focus is engagement with local communities, those living within the cull zone and people wishing to exercise their legal right to protest against the cull.

We understand that the badger cull is a sensitive issue which will divide opinion across our communities and the rest of the UK and we would like to reassure our communities that our policing response will be independent, impartial, even-handed and fair to everyone, whatever their views, interest or involvement in the scheme.

We work with the communities affected by the cull and ensure we understand and respond to any policing concerns they have. Visit the frequently asked questions page for more information.

Our policing response to the cull has now ended. During the operation we have worked with the communities affected by the cull to ensure we understand and respond to any policing concerns they have had. This year there have been very few police incidents and throughout we have striven to remain independent, impartial, even-handed and fair to everyone, whatever their views, interest or involvement in the scheme.
