Certificates are typically issued in four months. However, this can vary depending on the requirements of the application and also the overall demand for certificate renewals.
Certificates are typically issued in 16 months
The wait time to receive your certificate depends on your case’s complexity and how quickly we can arrange to see you and your security arrangements.
Firearms applications take longer due to the variety of weapons involved and justification for the use as a requirement, requiring specialised training for our staff.
The Firearms Licensing Unit can be contacted on 01905 727 547 Monday to Friday, from 9.30am to 5pm.
Ensure all required documents, including a GP note, are included. Incomplete applications will be returned. You will need to resubmit a complete application.
Please avoid calling to check the status of your application. We'll contact you if additional information is needed.
Use the online forms, where possible, for changes of address, weapon transfers, and other updates.
If your certificate is due for renewal, act promptly. Failure to renew on time may require a new grant application, during which you cannot legally access your weapons until you’re granted a certificate. If you have forgotten to re-apply for your certificate, please make arrangements to lodge your weapons before we contact you.
Public safety is our priority. We focus our daily activities according to the demands to ensure you're in legal possession of your weapons and are safe to do so. We'll always prioritise renewals of certificates in favour of those applying for a grant. Our number one priority is to make sure you, your family and the public are safe from the misuse of legally held weapons.
If you have any general enquiries, please contact the Firearms Licensing team.
