We have introduced the Step Programme. This is a three tiered programme which aims to support under- represented groups seeking to join and already working within the force:
Step In – a programme designed to provide support to potential applicants who identify as being from an under-represented group, including targeted recruitment campaigns, online webinars, 1-2-1 coaching, mock interviews and buddying with members of our staff networks
Step Across – a programme which seeks to encourage staff to progress to specialist roles where they are traditionally under-represented through online awareness sessions, rewording of job adverts, conducting surveys to understand barriers to applying for roles and marketing of opportunities through staff networks.
Step Up - a programme encouraging staff from under-represented groups to seek promotion through online webinars including input from role models detailing their promotion journey, hints and tips to preparing for boards, offers of career chats with senior officers, coaching and mentoring and marketing of promotion opportunities through staff networks.
Development of leadership development training and programmes for staff and officers from under-represented groups, e.g. introduction of PALS an externally delivered programme to support with retaining and developing ethnic minority officers and staff with potential.
Has your force made any commitment to recruiting certain numbers from ethnic minority communities?
West Mercia’s aim is to be representational of its ethnic minority communities by 2025 – based on the 2011 census data that would be 3.8% ethnic minority representation, we have also set an aspirational target of 5%.
