I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 21st February 2022. Please find below the response to your request:
I am attempting to find which police forces have had the most “road rage” related driving offences in the UK.
My questions are as follows:
For the calendar years 2019, 2020 and 2021 – could you please respond with:
The number of reported crimes which mentioned “road rage” in the MO field of the crime report and the detailed crime type.
The number of road traffic accidents recorded with a contributing factor of “aggressive driving” (code 601)

- For the calendar year 2019 the number of reported crimes which mentioned “road rage” in the MO field of the crime report totals 69.
The detailed crime types in this period include Assault with Injury, Assault Without Injury, Criminal Damage To A Vehicle, Harassment, Malicious Communications, Other Offences (Against The State And Public Order), Possession of Other Weapons, Public Fear, Alarm or Distress, Racially or Religiously Aggravated Assault Without Injury, Racially or Religiously Aggravated Public Fear, Alarm or Distress and Robbery Of Personal Property.
- For the calendar year 2020 the number of reported crimes which mentioned “road rage” in the MO field of the crime report totals 44.
The detailed crime types in this period include Assault with Injury, Assault with Intent to Cause Serious Harm, Assault Without Injury, Criminal Damage To A Vehicle, Dangerous Driving, Harassment, Malicious Communications, Possession of Article with Blade or Point, Possession of Other Weapons Public Fear, Alarm or Distress and Racially or Religiously Aggravated Public Fear, Alarm or Distress.
- For the calendar year 2021 the number of reported crimes which mentioned “road rage” in the MO field of the crime report totals 63.
The detailed crime types in this period include Assault with Injury, Assault with Intent to Cause Serious Harm, Assault Without Injury, Controlling or Coercive Behaviour, Criminal Damage To A Vehicle, Cruelty to and Neglect of Children, Malicious Communications, Possession of Article with Blade or Point, Possession of Other Weapons, Public Fear, Alarm or Distress and Racially or Religiously Aggravated Public Fear, Alarm or Distress and Trafficking in Controlled Drugs.
- The number of road traffic accidents recorded with a contributing factor of “aggressive driving” (code 601) for the calendar year 2019 totals 59. Please be aware that these are injury/fatal RTCs as contributory factors are not recorded for damage only collisions.
- The number of road traffic accidents recorded with a contributing factor of “aggressive driving” (code 601) for the calendar year 2020 totals 62. Please be aware that these are injury/fatal RTCs as contributory factors are not recorded for damage only collisions.
