FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 146080
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 17th January 2022. Please find below the response to your request:
Can you provide information regarding any policies concerned in the wearing of sunglasses whilst on duty by uniformed police officers and particularly those engaged in driving or firearms duties and any supporting rationale. Also if any sunglasses are issued to police officers in certain roles.
Reply:-
West Mercia Police do have a Dress and Appearance Policy. With regards to Sunglasses:
Spectacles and sunglasses must be discreet and in keeping with a professional image.
If, for operational reasons, there is concern on health and safety grounds about wearing spectacles or sunglasses, a risk assessment must be completed.
Sunglasses can be worn, but must be made of a shatterproof material. Mirrored lenses are not permitted for individuals who are in uniform or come into contact with the public. The individual’s eyes must remain visible through the lenses. Sunglasses must be removed when in direct contact with the public and colleagues, or when indoors. Individuals who need to wear sunglasses on medical grounds must seek approval from their line manager.
