I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 23rd February 2023. Please find below the response to your request:
Could you please supply me with the following information concerning disability hate crime, as outlined below.
1: How many disability hate crimes have been recorded by your police force in 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/2020, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23
2: Regarding the yearly totals mentioned in question one, what was the total number of cases in which the victim was:
Under 16
16-17
18-25
26-40
41-60
Over 60
3: How many of the recorded incidents of disability hate crimes in the yearly totals mentioned in question one concerned acts of violence against a person?
4: How many of the recorded incidents of disability hate crimes in the yearly totals mentioned in question one took place online?
5: If recorded, please state the total number of disability hate crime cases carried out in/around school property (please include all educational establishments from early years to FE colleges).
6: Please state the total number of disability hate crime cases carried out in/around university property.
Reply
The accuracy of the returned results is reliant on the correct information being entered onto our crime recording system. Due to a change in our local crime recording system we have provided information from 01 April 2018 onwards. Not all behaviour in which someone perceives themselves to be a victim due to their disability amount to a crime, in line with The Home Office Recording Standards some behaviour is recorded as incidents, in these cases persons involved are not listed as victims and suspects, but as involved parties, there may also be incidents where the victim was not identified. The ages of these people have not been included within the answer for question 2. Offences which occurred via the internet should have a “Online” ASB Keyword linked to them, none of the results did and therefore it appears that none of the offences occurred via the internet. We are unable to search for addresses via a description, eg within the vicinity of a school, therefore for questions 5 and 6 I have included results where the name of the location includes “school”, “academy” or “college”, none of the locations contained the word “University”.
