I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 16^th August 2024.  Please find below the response to your request:

This request concerns vehicle examinations following collisions.

Most modern vehicles store pre-crash data or ‘event data’ in their airbag control units when they are involved in a collision. The data can be accessed using specialist equipment (usually Bosch CDR or Crash Scan).

1. Does your organisation have crash retrieval equipment?
2. If so, what equipment is used?
3. How often is the equipment used?
4. On average, how long is it between the data being acquired and those data being provided to the investigating officer? As all investigations are different it would be acceptable to report the average for prosecution cases only.

1. West Mercia Police does possess Crash Data Retrieval equipment.

2. If so, what equipment is used?

1. The equipment used is the Bosch CDR.

3. How often is the equipment used?

1. No specific information held.

4. On average, how long is it between the data being acquired and those data being provided to the investigating officer? As all investigations are different it would be acceptable to report the average for prosecution cases only.

1. No specific information held. However on average, a report is submitted to the investigating officer within 10 days.
