I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 6th February 2024. Please find below the response to your request:
We would like to ask for the following information please:
- What percentage of all reported crimes were bicycle thefts in each full year of 2023, 2022, 2021. (If it is easier, we are happy for you to provide the total number of crimes and the total number of bicycle thefts for each year, and we can work out the percentage ourselves).
- What percentage of all bicycle thefts were electric bikes for the year of 2023?
- A breakdown of bicycle thefts in each city covered by West Mercia Police for the year of 2023

Caveats:
We have only provided the total number of crimes reported within West Mercia as we do not record these figures in terms of percentages.
There is a property field for recording stolen bikes however this is not a mandatory field and so not always completed (of 2114 offences recorded within the Primary Offence Sub Group of Bicycle Theft within a 3 year period 1941 had no details in the property field). To search for E Bikes stolen we have therefore used both a search of the property field and a keyword search within the incident summary. If the bike was not described within the incident summary then it will not be included in these results.
West Mercia has two cities within our force area: Hereford and Worcester. There is a field for location type (Town, City, Rural) on our crime recording system but it is not mandatory and so not always completed. We have therefore instead relied upon a search using line 3 of the location field. Some locations may have been included, which although are labelled as Worcester or Hereford may not be in the city centre, they maybe in the suburbs.
