FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 461133
I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 3rd March 2026. Please find below the response to your request:
Definition
For the purpose of this request, please interpret “school break-ins” as:
Recorded burglary or attempted burglary offences (business and community / non-residential burglary) where the recorded premises or location type is a school or educational establishment (including primary, secondary, and sixth-form/FE colleges where identifiable).
If your recording system uses alternative location classifications, please use the closest equivalent and briefly explain how this maps to the definition above.
Time period
Please provide data for the last five complete calendar years:
2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 (inclusive).
If only available by financial year, please provide the closest five-year period and specify which period has been used.
Requested information
For each year in scope, please provide:
In addition, where held in a structured format:
For each offence (or aggregated annually if preferred), please provide the structured geographic field(s) already held in your crime recording system, such as:
I understand that full addresses or full postcodes may engage personal data exemptions; I am only requesting structured geographic identifiers held in your system that can be disclosed.
If specific fields cannot be released, please specify which are held but exempt.
For the same offences, please provide the number assigned to each recorded outcome type per year (e.g., charge/summons, investigation complete – no suspect identified, evidential difficulties, etc.).

Where held in structured format, please provide:
If property value is recorded in a structured field, please also provide:
Reply
Your request for information has been considered in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”), and I am not obliged to provide the information requested.
S.12(1) of the Act states that a public authority is not obliged to comply with a request for information if the authority estimates that the cost of complying with the request would exceed the “appropriate limit”. For police forces in England and Wales, the "appropriate limit" is £450 or 18 hours of work as set by the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
The information you have requested regarding data on the stolen property is not available in a readily retrievable format. There are over 248 records. In order to ascertain whether the information you have requested is held would take in excess of 18 hours as each record would have to be checked individually. This is not a mandatory field to complete.
In accordance with s.17(5) of the Act, this acts as a Refusal Notice.
However, In accordance with Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide advice and assistance in relation to your request and can provide some of the information requested as this was retrieved during our initial research. This should not be taken as a precedent that additional information would be supplied outside of the time/fees legislation for any subsequent requests
Caveat: To try and capture all school establishments, the words ‘college’ and ‘academy’ has been included in the Location Premises Name field as not all primary or secondary establishments have the word ‘school’ in their titles. The return will also include colleges of education and schools that have sixth forms.
