I write in connection with your request for information which was received on 14^th August 2026. Please find below the response to your request:

 

 

For each calendar year 2023, 2024 and 2025, please provide the following information for your force:

 

1. The number of initial Notices of Intended Prosecution issued for road traffic offences.
2. The number of requirements to provide driver information issued under section 172 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
3. The number of reminder notices issued in relation to unanswered section 172 requirements.
4. The number of cases recorded as referred, charged or otherwise proceeded with for an alleged failure to provide driver information under section 172(3).
5. Whether recipients could respond to a section 172 requirement online during each of those years. If so, please provide the public URL or the name of the system.
6. If your force already holds a report showing the average or median number of days between receiving a nomination and issuing a notice or driver information requirement to the nominated person, please provide that existing figure or report. We are not asking the force to create a new calculation for this item.

 

Clarification:

 

For the purpose of request HRC0025845/26, please limit the offence

type to speed limit offences only, meaning alleged offences of

exceeding a statutory speed limit.

 

This should include camera detected and officer detected speeding

matters where they are recorded within your speed limit offence

category. Other road traffic offence types may be excluded.

 

Please apply that scope to the original questions as follows:

 

1. Initial Notices of Intended Prosecution issued in relation to

alleged speed limit offences.

 

2. Section 172 driver information requirements issued in relation to

alleged speed limit offences.

 

3. Reminder notices issued in relation to unanswered section 172

requirements arising from alleged speed limit offences.

 

4. Cases referred, charged or otherwise proceeded with under section

172(3) arising from those matters, where the underlying alleged

offence can be identified.

 

If your system cannot link section 172(3) proceedings to the

underlying alleged speeding offence, please provide the nearest

recorded category held, including total section 172(3) figures if that

is the only available measure, and state that limitation.

 

For question 5, please provide the online response route used for

section 172 requirements in speeding matters. If the same route

applies to all offence types, the general route is sufficient.

 

For question 6, please provide any existing average or median timing

measure for nominations arising from speeding matters. If no offence

specific timing report is held, please confirm whether any wider

nomination timing report is held. No new calculation is requested.
