West Mercia Police is proud to be Disability Confident

We are proud to have been officially recognised as a Disability Confident Leader by the Department of Work and Pensions for our on-going work towards creating a safe and inclusive environment for those with a disability.  

The award recognises our continued commitment to disabled people in the workplace through our embedded practices to support staff and ensuring that recruitment processes are fair and effective for people with disabilities.  

An important part of the Disability Confident scheme is creating the kind of culture where people feel confident, where they can approach their manager if they need support. 

At West Mercia Police, we have a support network named the Ability Network, as well as the Autism and Neurodiversity Network. These networks allow our police officers and staff with a disability, to share experiences, drive change, and discuss matters that are important to them.  

T/DCC Richard Cooper said “Reaching Disability Confident Leader status is a significant milestone and is the result of lots of hard work by many people, to whom I’m really grateful. It’s just a milestone though, and the reality is that working for West Mercia Police with a disability is often still harder than it should be. Disability affects so many of us, or are families, and I’m determined that we keep getting better."
