Officer’s actions praised as man gets three years for GBH in Worcester

An officer’s ‘lifesaving’ actions have been praised in a case where a man was given three years for GBH following a serious assault in Worcester city centre.

Brennan Kilner, 26, of Mersey Road, Worcester, pled guilty to GBH at Worcester Crown Court on Friday (8 March) where he was sentenced to 40 months, reduced to 36 months for his guilty plea.

On the evening of August 8, 2023, officers were made aware by the ambulance service of an assault outside of Tesco Express in Worcester city centre where a man was left unconscious, and his attackers had fled the scene.

Police Constable Edward Bishop was among those who attended the scene and located the man who was now conscious and being attended to by paramedics.

Although able to communicate, the victim was disorientated sparking concern from PC Bishop who has since been praised by colleagues for his quick thinking at the time.

Officers quickly went about identifying who the offenders were and through CCTV enquiries established and identified the people present at the time of the offence.

Worcester detectives conducted a thorough and comprehensive investigation where by three males were identified, arrested, and interviewed on suspicion of causing Grievous Bodily Harm.

Brennan Kilner, who initially stated he was not guilty and had acted in self-defence, was remanded into custody but was later bailed by the courts until the trial date.

Kilner attended court on February 5 where he changed his plea to guilty of causing Grievous Bodily Harm and was sentenced to 36 months on Friday.

Detective Constable Catherine Pinney of Worcester Reactive CID said: “This was a particularly nasty and serious assault which has resulted in life changing injuries for the victim, though he is continuing to progress with the support of his friends and family.

“The quick thinking and actions of PC Bishop who was able to support the victim to remain with the paramedics and receive treatment in this case without a doubt saved his life.

“The man quickly deteriorated and needed to be transferred to hospital urgently for immediate brain surgery, where his condition was life threatening. PC Bishop travelled with the man and remained with him throughout this procedure until his family arrived.

“This court result shows we do not tolerate violence of any kind in our communities and will always bring those suspected of such attacks to justice while seeking to protect the public we serve from harm.”
