An incident in Long Lartin prison this morning (Friday 30 May), in which a prison officer was stabbed, is not being treated as terrorism and audio footage currently circulating on social media, claiming to be of the aftermath, is not connected to this incident.
Assistant Chief Constable Grant Wills said: “Whilst our investigation is in its early stages, we would like to clarify that this incident is not being treated as terrorism. Our initial enquiries suggest there was a disagreement between an inmate and prison officer that escalated and is an isolated matter within the prison.
“The injured prison officer currently remains in hospital in a stable condition, and we are sending him our best wishes for a full and quick recovery.”
We can confirm that the weapon used was a knife.
A 22-year-old man remains in custody within the prison at this time.
